Kotor is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and in recent years more visitors from around the world have begun arriving on cruises and tours.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Kotor has also become a popular **day trip** destination from Dubrovnik, Croatia.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>From the walls you get sweeping views of the orange rooftops and the calm, beautiful Bay of Kotor\u2014**the best viewpoint in town!** If you visit Kotor, make sure you don\u2019t skip the **city walls**.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Below is practical information for touring Kotor\u2019s walls that will definitely come in handy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Steep mountain path\u2014prepare properly in advance<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7374\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7374\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7374\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crotabi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/61a93099dbb1d74f1370febc65851305.jpg\" alt=\"Entrance near the North Gate. Construction began in the 9th century, and the current form was completed around the 15th century.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The walls stretch about **4.5 km** in total and climb all the way to the summit. The point where the **St. John (Sveti Ivan) Fortress** stands is about **260 m above sea level**, and you\u2019ll climb **1,355 steps** to reach it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So rather than a casual \u201cstroll along the walls,\u201d it\u2019s closer to a **hike**\u2014you\u2019ll need proper preparation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are **two entrances** to access the walls: the main one is near the **North Gate**, and the other is on **Trg od Salate (Salad Square)**. Kotor\u2019s Old Town is very small, so once you\u2019re there you\u2019ll find the entrances easily\u2014no worries!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7458\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crotabi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/kotor-map1.jpg\" alt=\"kotor map1\" width=\"640\" height=\"359\" \/><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As mentioned above, the walls follow a steep mountain trail with endless steps. Continue along the lane between atmospheric homes and you\u2019ll soon see a counter selling tickets (it\u2019s literally just a desk). **Admission is \u20ac15 per person**. It\u2019s **cash only**, so be prepared.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7375\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crotabi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/a5a9af125cd9f0b24da85f059c84693d.jpg\" alt=\"Kotor (5)\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And off we go\u2014**the wall walk (mountain climb)** begins! **It takes about 1 hour from the Old Town to the top at St. John Fortress.** If you stop for photos and short breaks, plan on about **1.5 hours**.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As you can see from the photo below, the route is a rugged stone path. I climbed it myself and, honestly, it\u2019s **not easy walking**\u2014but once you think about the view waiting up there, you\u2019ll forget the struggle.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7377\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crotabi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/dcd2134e85dca5180832f6f13e16b4aa.jpg\" alt=\"Kotor (7)\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why **good walking shoes are essential**!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ideally, wear comfortable sneakers that fully support your feet. There are **no toilets** along the way, so be sure to use the restroom **before** you start your climb.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In summer in particular, avoid heatstroke by hydrating frequently.
